Whaling Around the World
Edited by Kathy Happynook

Whaling Around the World is a celebration of modern-day whaling in coastal communities around the world.

Since time immemorial, people have looked to the sea for sustenance, and in the process have defined themselves in terms of culture, nutritional needs, and economies. Perhaps no fishery has done so more, or with such variety and richness of tradition, as whaling.

As the 21st century gets under way, Whaling Around the World looks at those communities which hold the future of whaling in their hands. Spanning three continents, our journey takes us from Canada through the United States and down to the Caribbean, across the Atlantic from Greenland to the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Russia, and back across the Pacific to Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Lavish illustrations capture the extraordinary variety of practices and techniques associated with modern whaling, from the skin boats of Greenland, unchanged for centuries, to the diesel-powered fishing boats plying the waters of northern Norway. Just as rich in variety are the methods for preparing whale meat, and the art forms crafted from by-products.

Whaling Around the World will appeal to an audience as diverse as the whalers themselves. But perhaps most of all, it will fill with awe those people who have yet to discover the rich and timeless pageant of one of our oldest fisheries.

Whaling for Food
Edited by Kathy Happynook

This book gives us information on a topic that many people may be unfamiliar with today: whaling and food. The unfamiliarity stems from the fact that for many people whale meat is not available in stores, on restaurant menus, or spoken about at home.

It is not part of most peoples’ food culture. Yet for some people, whale products are part of their customary diet, part of their national cuisine, and as such do contribute importantly to the health and well being of members of those societies. This book contains numerous recipes and photos that illustrate the importance of whales as a source of food.

Edited by Kathy Happynook WCW Publications; 8.5 x 5.5 format, 30 colour photos, numerous black and white photos, illustrations, glossary, 101 pages, $10.00 (CDN) ISBN 0-9733760-1-5
