Whaling
Around the World is a celebration of modern-day whaling in coastal communities
around the world.
Since time immemorial, people have looked to
the sea for sustenance, and in the process have defined themselves in terms of
culture, nutritional needs, and economies. Perhaps no fishery has done so
more, or with such variety and richness of tradition, as whaling.
As the 21st century gets under way, Whaling
Around the World looks at those communities which hold the future of whaling
in their hands. Spanning three continents, our journey takes us from Canada
through the United States and down to the Caribbean, across the Atlantic from
Greenland to the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Russia, and back across
the Pacific to Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Lavish illustrations capture the
extraordinary variety of practices and techniques associated with modern
whaling, from the skin boats of Greenland, unchanged for centuries, to the
diesel-powered fishing boats plying the waters of northern Norway. Just as
rich in variety are the methods for preparing whale meat, and the art forms
crafted from by-products.
Whaling Around the World will appeal to an
audience as diverse as the whalers themselves. But perhaps most of all, it
will fill with awe those people who have yet to discover the rich and timeless
pageant of one of our oldest fisheries.
