2nd IWMC SYMPOSIUM
on 
SUSTAINABLE USE
"In the Search of Innovative Conservation Initiatives"

The 2nd IWMC Symposium conducted by IWMC World Conservation Trust on Sustainable Use of Wildlife Resources will be held in Chengdu, People's Republic of China from 22 to 26 November 1999. 
  

 
I - Venue
The Symposium will be held in the Jin Jiang Hotel, Chengdu, where all participants will be accommodated. The Jin Jiang Hotel is a five-star hotel, offering all facilities of most modern hotels.  It is located in the center of Chengdu, the capital of the central province of Sichuan.  Chengdu is not far from the Panda Bear Reserve and the famous Yangtze River with its Three Gorges Dam Project. 
  
 
II - Objectives
The objectives of the Symposium are to reinforce the notion of Sustainable Use as a conservation mechanism and to further develop the potential of Sustainable Use in the search for effective and practical solutions to conservation problems. 
  
 
III - Provisional Programme
This programme is provisional and its main purpose, at this time, is to provide guidelines to the Programme Committee.

Note: Through MKI Travel (in cooperation with the Government of the Province of Sichuan), Post-symposium tours in China are available.

 
 
IV - Logistical Arrangements


The participation is limited to 80 non-Chinese participants.  35 of them are already reserved for officials, lecturers and resource persons. 

The Symposium will be conducted in three languages through simultaneous interpretation: Chinese, English and Spanish. 

A Programme Committee is currently starting its operations to further develop the programme, select the chairpersons, lecturers, resource persons, topics etc.

Registration fees have been established at US$350 per participant. Only representatives of sponsors, sponsored lecturers and resource persons are exempted from the said fee. 

It should be noted that participation is
possible by invitation only from IWMC.
 
 
V - Procedures


Step 1 - Should you be interested in participating into IWMC's Symposium, you must forward your request for an invitation to IWMC by fax, mail or email (iwmc@ibm.net) at the following addresses:

You should also indicate: 
a)  your name, titles and full address, the government or organisation to which you belong; 
b)  your areas of concern or competence; 
c)  the possibility for you to lecture or/and to assist in some capacity; 
d) all relevant information susceptible of facilitating the issuance of an invitation. 

Step 2 - Your request must be forwarded to IWMC's offices no later than 15 June 1999. 

Step 3 - Between 15 June and 1st July 1999, the IWMC Board of Directors will proceed with the evaluation and selection of all requests, taking into account, factors such as, the order in which the requests were received, the importance of the organisation (precedence will be given to government officials), the limitation of space, etc, A list of those to be invited will be established with a waiting list. 

Step 4 - On the first week of July, invitations will be sent to those selected with a full package of information. Invitations will be personal and will not be transferable. 

Step 5 - Participants will be requested to make all logistical arrangements such as travel itineraries and hotel accommodations with MKI Travel, prior to 1st October 1999. 

Step 6 - Upon completion of the logistical arrangements, participants' names will be communicated to the Government of China, that will decide on the issuance of an official invitation for visa purposes

We urge all participants to proceed with their application for entry visa in China  as soon as the invitation for visa purposes is received from the Chinese Authorities.
