Welcome to
Fundación Biodiversidad:
Argentina
|
We
are pleased to announce the birth of Fundación Biodiversidad - Argentina,
a fundamental tool concentrating the skills and energy of a dedicated group of
people, with the principal aim of facing the complex challenges of
conserving Argentina’s biological diversity. The foundation will achieve its
mission by building resource management and sustainable development capacity
through a training program, and by educating public and private sector decision
makers on issues concerning the sustainable use of resources and development.
The foundation’s President, Mr. Obdulio Menghi, a long time associate of IWMC
– World Conservation Trust, hopes you will support their mission and provide
your link to the foundation.

High North Web News (8 June 2001) reports that Iceland has rejoined the
International Whaling Commission (IWC), with a reservation with respect to the
so-called "moratorium" on commercial whaling.
Ever since Iceland withdrew from the IWC in 1992, a number of states have
asked Iceland to rejoin. This applies not only to states that are in favor of
sustainable whaling but also to states that are opposed to whaling and states
which consider themselves to be in the middle on this issue. These states have
emphasized that the IWC is an important forum in matters concerning whaling and
that all states with interests regarding whaling should be members of the IWC.

EIA is hardly a conservation winner

The notorious Environmental Investigation Agency was named as a recipient of
UNEP’s Global 500 Award. Quite a feat for an organization that brought CITES
into disreputation and was rejected by the CITES Standing Committee as a donor
organization. But somehow all that doesn’t seem to matter to UNEP, which
administers the CITES Secretariat. Or is this obvious inconsistency just an
oversight?
