The Fight for the Beluga Sturgeon...

There is no end to the environmentalists' efforts in their attempts to deprive resources' managers from their possibilities of action.

After having failed to find a Party to the CITES Convention to propose the listing of the beluga sturgeon on Appendix I of the Convention, Caviar Emptor and its allies such as National Defense Research Council are now attempting to force "legally" the US Fish and Wildlife Service to list the beluga sturgeon on the US Endangered Species List.

The normally highly-conservative US Fish and Wildlife Service had originally refused to proceed with the listing of the beluga sturgeon on its Endangered Species List, fully aware that such a listing could not be justified scientifically, could not assist in the conservation of the beluga sturgeon and could not resist the challenge and scrutiny. Nevertheless, the saviors of the sturgeon are not going to let such a tremendous opportunity of fund-raising go by...

The deadline for submission of comments to the US Fish and Wildlife Service is 19 August 2002.
