National Geographic Inaccuracies

The March 2004 issue of National Geographic Magazine features a whitecoat harp seal on the cover, and includes a superficial article entitled "Harp Seals The Hunt for Balance". A number of inaccuracies and a misleading impression that whitecoats are the main target of the hunt, result in an irresponsible piece of journalism. Worse, at the end of the article is an invitation to readers to visit the website, in order to participate in a readers' forum, and an opportunity to "vote" for or against the hunt in a "poll" on the web page. When the website was accessed, the "poll" functioned, but the "forum" did not. It was possible to e-mail the magazine regarding this article.
