Greenpeace Exploits Damaged Ship, Injured Crew to Promote Agenda |
| 22 December 1998 - Dunedin, Florida: In a manner that has become
more tragic than comic, Greenpeace recently grabbed international press
attention by exploiting a disaster that destroyed a Japanese ship and seriously
injured many crewmen.
Greenpeace activists chained themselves to the anchor of the Nisshin Maru, a Japanese whaling ship severely damaged from an on-board accident. "Greenpeace and a callous, sensationalist media used the occasion for shameless self promotion," said Eugene Lapointe, President of the IWMC. "The actions of Greenpeace dramatically underscore that it is not the suffering of people or whales that motivates this organization, but rather the money they raise through irresponsible publicity stunts such as this," Lapointe said. "A strategy the media makes possible." "Greenpeace claimed their actions a victory for whales. In truth, despite our philosophical differences over whaling, it was a setback for compassion," concluded Lapointe. "To celebrate human suffering can never benefit animals or people."
