Conservation and Sustainable Use of Sturgeon in the Russian Federation
Dr Sergei Nikonorov

Deputy Chairman of the Inter Agencies Ichthyological Commission and Deputy Chairman of the CITES Scientific Authority

Complex impact of all these negative factors resulted in decrease in numbers of mature fishes, worsening of their physiological state (females with different diseases of sexual system form about 20%) and decline of natural reproduction. Factory breeding and hatcheries, judging by its scales and life hardiness of released young fish, is not in position to perform task on compensation for loss in restocking of sturgeons in the Caspian Sea basin, the more so as its scales tends to decrease.

Status of sturgeon populations in the Azov Sea basin: Russian sturgeon (Acipenser guldenstaedti), starred sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus), great sturgeon (Huso huso), sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus), barbel sturgeon (Acipenser nudiventris) ranged earlier in small quantity, but over the last five years no representatives of this species were caught. Thus barbel sturgeon population is considered as having disappeared completely in this basin.
