It is my privilege to welcome you and thank those who made this event possible. Special recognition is in order for the Government of the People's Republic of China, for the Sichuan Province and the CITES Management Authority who are our gracious hosts.

What we will do here in the next few days is vital for the conservation of the world's wild resources but it is what we will accomplish after we leave that will become our legacy.

We must make others understand that mankind is not in conflict with nature and that through the exercise of the sustainable use principles, we can achieve abundance and prosperity.

There are exciting times ahead of us and what we are witnessing is a chance to move away from the failures of the past and move ahead to a brighter future.

Again, I welcome you all and look forward to this exchange of ideas and gathering of friendship.
