Distinguished
guests, ladies and gentlemen
The goals of Grenada in joining the Convention
on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)
Parties is to combine its efforts to those of the CITES Convention in
recognizing that the natural systems of the earth must be protected for the
generations to come.
Grenada will be a good protector of its own
wild fauna and flora.
Though the international cooperation is
essential for the protection of certain species, Grenada will work to protect,
on its own territory, the over-exploitation of its native species through the
establishment of domestic legislation.
Grenada shall develop stricter domestic
measures regarding the conditions for trade of specimens of species and will
take the necessary domestic measures to restrict or prohibit trade of species
not includes in CITES Appendices I, II and III.
Finally, Grenada is pleased to part of the
conservation efforts undertaken by the community of nations, through its new
involvement in CITES and its continued involvement in the International Whaling
Commission (IWC). Our efforts will be guided by the respect of the traditions
and culture of the people for whom wild species are so important.
