Relationship between Fisheries
and Development in Viet Nam

Dr Le Xuan Canh

Deputy Director Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources
Viet Nam

Fisheries with National Economic Development

Faced difficulties. Capital invested in the fisheries over the past few years is to modest. Foreign partners have intentionally concentrated their capital on specific areas such as aquaculture, processing or exploitation. No establishment have dared to invest across the board. Out of 74 licensed projects totaling $322 million, 37 projects worth nearly $200 million were cancelled because of licence withdrawal. Fishery infrastructure has not been given the attention it deserves. Processing factories suffer from a serious lack of modern equipment, and thus are limited in improving product quality. At present, aquatic and marine products are mostly semi-processed, which is why the export value of seafood and specialties has been limited. The industry can not afford the capital needed to buy the equip big ships and boats which are able to operate well offshore. the number of small size ships and boats which have to operate near the shore is estimated at 15-17%, causing the depletion of stocks of aquatic animals near inshore, while huge offshore potential remains unexploited.

Preparation for the better future. Although the fisheries are facing a pessimistic future, big plans and targets have been proposed.
