Traditional Chinese Medicine Makes Nature and Man as a Whole
Prof. Huang Qingxian
(biography)
Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Introduction

Being protection a prerequisite, TCM uses natural resources properly to benefit people well - from three aspects: the relation of protecting natural resources and protecting man's benefits; the usage of living beings by the TCM and the mutual beneficial relationship between the user and the used; and efforts made by TCM in protecting animals and plants.

The Relation of Protecting
Natural Resources and Man's Benefits

Protecting and restoring the ecosystem balance of the earth is no longer only a good idea of the environmental protection organizations and the knowledgeable scholars, but has become aware by all governments and vast masses and the focus of the world's media, which shows the progress in man's thinking, resulted from dozens of year's hard working by such international organizations as CITES and IWMC.

But, when we are delighted that the thinking of natural resources protection is shared by more and more people, should we retrospect ourselves, what is our initial intention to protect the environmental and natural resources? All the governments, environment experts and specialists of sciences are sparing no efforts for the protection and restoration of the ecological balance of the earth. Is it for the sake of conscience? Is it a kind of regret for previous evil doings and unkindness to the living beings? Is it only a mercy or pity in religion? One point is very clear, no matter how humbly man regards himself as the later comers among the living beings, how honestly man declares that he coexists with them peacefully and makes friends with them, his target concern is to protect his own benefits. In another word, there is a relation between man's protection of nature and of his own benefits. There is no protection for protection's sake, but protection and sustainable development and use should be in a dialectical identity.

Based on what I stated above, I would like to explain the application of animals and plants in TCM, and the mutual promotion and interest between animals/plants and TCM.

TCM originated in China and covers Southeast Asia, which is recognized, understood, absorbed and applied by 130 countries. TCM towers aloft in world medicines with its 3000-year history, rich and systematic theories, unique and good therapeutic effect and the embodied social ethical thinking. Nowadays the limitations and side effects of western medicine are gradually seen by the people, medicine model is changing from biological medicine to the model of biology-society-psychology. The industrialization of society is speeding. The environmental damage and pollution deteriorate daily, and the people can do little to help some of the contemporary diseases. All those have induced people's strong desire to return to nature and seek natural medicine with little side effects. So, our Traditional Chinese Medicine attracts much attention of the world. For example, a great number of foreign people come to study in China, TCM students ranking first in number, nearly 4,000. Thousands of foreign medical colleagues abroad come to China for their advanced study in our herbal medicine and acupuncture and moxibustion. The intense popular interest in TCM is extending. Let's look at our university. Located in an inland city with comparatively inconvenient communication and transportation, there come 100-200 European and American doctors for their TCM knowledge every year. Over 80 overseas students are studying for their degrees. Furthermore, more than 1,000 visitors are warmly received yearly. We can say that people's needs demand TCM's spreading and developing, which will surely bring in benefits to the people. As is known to all, drugs applied in TCM come from plants, animals and minerals, with plants as its main resources. TCM has already a 3,000-year history in using natural drugs and is exploring new biological drug resources. Could we say such usage has caused plants and animals endangered and extinguished? This is a question that should be deeply discussed.
