First of all, I would like to thank Mr Lapointe and all IWMC organizers for this opportunity to speak today. It is an honor to be with many experts, business leaders and government officials associated with sustainable use of world's natural resources.

Well, today I have a few points to be made here on the subject of Tuna By-product Utilization. I hope my presentation would provide all of you at least an idea of how we do in a way of utilizing to convert the unused material into the high nutritious products and at the same time help to protect the environment.

For more than a decade, large scale tuna fish canning operations have taken place in Thailand. In terms of volume, Thailand is considerably the world no. 1 of canned tuna exporter, for over 20 million cases annually during the past 5 years. Its geography locating in between Indian and Pacific Ocean makes Thailand an ideal place not only in tuna fish accessing from nearby Oceanic supplies, but in distributing the canned one to worldwide destinations as well.

Why we do by-product utilization? Huge volumes of raw tuna fish go through canning and its related operation daily, by which we can account two-third of the whole fish part to be rendered. Reportedly more than 200,000 metric ton of tuna viscera and offal can be collected each year. And that bring about on how should we take this abundant raw material, which will eventually give us a pollution cause for concern, and work on it creatively in a way of full utilization.

What will we get from tuna by-products: We have utilized an offal and viscera received mainly from tuna fish cannery, initially developing them into fishmeal and fish liver powder used as protein source and additive for animal feed.

Feed ingredients

Fishmeal, fish liver powder: they are widely used as protein source for animal feed, especially aquaculture in which fishmeal is accounted around 30% of the feed usage.

Further, through our production process, liquid is also extracted and by purifying break-through such oils and other protein sources could be produced.

Fish soluble extract: This is a soluble protein and palatability enhancer for aquaculture feed. It could be used as fish organic fertilizer, helping to rebuild soil condition.

Tuna oil: Tuna fish oil has very unique feature. It contains very high concentration of docosahexaenoic (DHA), in a group of Omega-3 fatty acids, which is the most important fatty acid for marine fish and shellfish. In fact, DHA in tuna oil improves growth rate and survival rate of young animals, fish and shrimp.
