FAO Role in the World Fisheries Issues

Summary

In recent years, FAO's role in the world fisheries issues is ever increasing. Accordingly, FAO had compiled several important documents that present guidelines, principles, and specific measures for wide range of the fisheries issues. These documents include:

  • Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries,
  • The Kyoto Declaration and Plan of Action on the Sustainable Contribution of Fisheries to Food Security, and
  • The Rome Declaration on the Implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. FAO has also been active in such issues as over-capacity, shark conservation and management, incidental catches of seabirds, eco-labelling, and review of the CITES listing criteria.
