London, 24 July 2001: The International Whaling Commission (IWC) has
rejected by a vote of 21 to 12 an appeal submitted by the Caribbean countries to
get the IWC's support in their struggle against the threat of extreme actions by
the NGOs.
"The IWC, after having trampled upon the Sovereign Rights of Iceland by
refusing its membership, is going one step further by supporting Eco-terrorism.
Most international anti-whaling organizations like Greenpeace abuse the cultural
rights of less powerful nations.
In October 2000, Greenpeace U.K. wrote to the Caribbean Banana Exporters
Association with a hidden threat to destroy the banana industry of the Caribbean
Islands unless they change their stand at the IWC and this is just one of
several threats and actions by extreme NGOs such as the International Fund for
Animal Welfare (IFAW), the Sea Shepherd, etc.
"I can understand such attitude coming from U.K. and USA as they are
totally controlled and dominated by these NGOs when it comes to policies dealing
with whales" said Lapointe.
"But it is difficult to accept that countries such as Switzerland and
South Africa who claim to be champions of the respect of Sovereign Rights of
other countries voted against the plea of the small islands nations of the
Caribbean.
