Do whales really increase the oceanic removal of atmospheric carbon?
Whales are often described in the media as “climate savers” because of their possible role in storing and moving carbon through the ocean. However, this article takes a closer look at the science behind that claim and shows that, while whales are important for healthy marine ecosystems, their contribution to global carbon removal is still uncertain and likely much smaller than often suggested.
